Vaishnavi Adkar Breaks Into WTA Top 400
In an exciting development for Indian tennis, 21-year-old Vaishnavi Adkar has achieved a significant milestone by entering the WTA top 400 for the first time. After her impressive victory at the ITF W35 Kalaburagi tournament, Vaishnavi climbed 71 spots to reach No. 397 in the latest rankings. This puts her just six places behind India’s top player, Sahaja Yamalapalli, who is ranked No. 391.
A Year of Remarkable Growth
At the start of the year, Vaishnavi was ranked No. 643, but her hard work has clearly paid off. Her strong performances in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi have contributed to this rapid rise. In fact, she made history by being the first Indian woman since Sania Mirza in 2009 to reach a W100 final.
Stellar Performance in Kalaburagi
Vaishnavi’s journey in Kalaburagi was nothing short of spectacular. Not only did she win the singles title, but she also triumphed in the doubles category. Seeded third, she showcased her talent by defeating fellow Indian player Ankita Raina 7-6(3), 6-4 in the finals, demonstrating poise and skill throughout the match.
In the semifinal, she pulled off an impressive upset against top seed Jasmijn Gimbrere, taking the match with a commanding score of 6-3, 6-2. Teaming up with Ankita Raina for the doubles event, Vaishnavi completed a memorable weekend by winning the title with a straightforward 6-2, 6-2 victory over Soha Sadiq and Akanksha Nitture.
A Bright Future Ahead
Born on December 14, 2004, Vaishnavi is already recognized as one of India’s rising stars in tennis. Currently training at Kedar Shah’s Bounce Tennis Academy, she started playing at the age of seven and has achieved remarkable feats, including an ITF junior ranking of No. 115 and being crowned India’s No. 1 Under-14 player.
Her list of accomplishments includes winning her first professional singles title at the ITF W15 Ahmedabad and representing India at the Summer World University Games in Germany, where she earned a bronze medal—the first for an Indian woman in tennis at the games.
With her recent successes in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi, Vaishnavi Adkar is poised to make a significant impact on the international tennis stage in the years to come.
