Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms Expected Across Many Indian States
Travellers in India should stay alert as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds are forecasted to disrupt transportation in several areas. This warning comes from the All India Weather Summary & Forecast Bulletin, issued on May 2 at 7:53 PM.
For the next five days, the Northeastern and Eastern regions will likely experience significant rainfall. The South may also see long-lasting showers, which could impact travel by land, rail, and air.
The Northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, are expected to face severe weather conditions with heavy rains and thunderstorms. During the initial days of this period, these areas are at risk of flooding, reduced visibility, and landslides, especially since many are in hilly terrains.
West Bengal and Sikkim will also be under a rainfall warning, with anticipated thunderstorms and strong winds expected to intensify from May 4 to 5. Additionally, states like Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha should prepare for sporadic rain and thunderstorms over the next week. Winds could reach up to 70 kilometers per hour in some areas, potentially leading to flight delays, train cancellations, and road closures.
In the northern parts of India, including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, there will be intermittent showers mixed with thunderstorms until the first week of May. Some regions may see hail and dust storms, particularly on May 4 and 5, which could create difficulties for those planning trips to the hills during this slippery season.
In central India, places like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh can expect isolated thunderstorms and strong winds. The southern peninsula, with states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, will experience widespread rainfall and thunderstorms until at least May 6. Heavy rains are forecast for Kerala and Tamil Nadu until May 8, followed by more downpours in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Furthermore, hot and humid weather may create a heatwave along the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh, and marine conditions are expected to be rough in the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen are advised to refrain from sea activities during this time.
Possible impacts from the anticipated weather include flooding in urban areas, traffic congestion, and infrastructure damage. Hilly regions should be cautious of landslides and mudslides.
Travellers are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and plan for extra time in their journeys. Those intending to visit the Northeastern, Eastern, or Western Himalayan regions may need to reconsider their travel plans over the next few days.
