Mumbai Indians’ Struggles: A Shift in Fortune for Star Players

In just a few weeks, the fortunes of Mumbai Indians’ star players have taken a startling turn. On March 8, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav were celebrated as champions after India secured its third T20 World Cup title. Their performances had turned them into national heroes, but the euphoria has dissipated.

As of May 2, these same players are facing criticism for their lackluster performances in IPL 2026. Bumrah, known for his exceptional bowling, has managed only three wickets in nine matches, with a staggering average of 94.67—stats that seem almost unbelievable for such a skilled bowler.

Tilak Varma has scored 193 runs this season, including a century, but his consistency has been a concern. Suryakumar Yadav’s struggle continued during a recent match in Chepauk, where he was dismissed for 21 runs, unable to convert a promising start into a big score. His tally now stands at just 183 runs from nine matches.

Hardik Pandya appeared particularly disheartened after a recent game, acknowledging that the season hasn’t gone as planned. With 183 runs and four wickets from eight matches, his performance reflects a lack of rhythm and control.

The question on everyone’s mind is whether the high from the T20 World Cup has turned into a hangover for the Indian players. Have the strains of continuous cricket finally taken a toll?

Mumbai’s coach, Mahela Jayawardene, believes it’s too soon to panic. Despite the mounting pressure, he insists that the team still has a mathematical chance to qualify for the playoffs, and that hope keeps their spirits alive.

“It’s early to say anything. We have five more games to play,” Jayawardene said in a post-match conference. “We just need to finish strong and see how things unfold. We’re not out of the tournament yet.”

What’s Causing the Underperformance?

With the pressure increasing, questions abound about what’s going wrong for Mumbai’s star players. Jayawardene emphasized that the issues extend beyond individual players like Bumrah. He pointed out that the collective struggle affects their performance.

“It’s not just Bumrah; it’s all the bowlers working together. When they pick up wickets, it allows Bumrah to be more aggressive rather than just holding back,” he explained. “Every player can have an off season, but their talent remains.”

As for Tilak Varma, Jayawardene sees his recent challenges as part of his growth. While flashes of brilliance are evident, he is still figuring out how to perform consistently.

“Tilak is learning to adapt to his new roles. T20 is demanding, and with more experience, he’ll find his way,” he noted.

When it comes to Suryakumar, it’s about small margins. Although his intent and skill remain, the results haven’t matched up.

“I don’t think he’s performing poorly; he just needs to string some good scores together. He played well at times but got out at crucial moments,” Jayawardene remarked. “It’s a matter of time before things turn in his favor.”

Despite these setbacks, Mumbai’s star-studded lineup still promises big things. With proven match-winners and international talent, they should ideally excel. However, the unpredictable nature of cricket means that results don’t always go as planned.

For the five-time champions, the path to recovery will be a hard lesson. While the echoes of their World Cup triumph still resonate, they must navigate the inconsistent waters of IPL 2026, one game at a time.
