UK Elevates Terror Alert to Severe Following Antisemitic Stabbing in Golders Green

U.K. Raises Terror Threat Level After Antisemitic Attack

Britain has elevated its national terror threat level to “severe” following a stabbing incident in Golders Green, where two individuals were targeted. Authorities now believe another attack could happen within the next six months.

This decision by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) came just a day after police confirmed the stabbing in north London as a terrorist act. Officials stated that the threat increase is not linked solely to this incident but indicates a wider rise in extreme right-wing terrorism in the country.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood labeled the attack as “abhorrent” and expressed concern for the Jewish community, which has faced significant hardship.

In response to growing antisemitic violence, including recent attacks on Jewish sites, the U.K. government has announced an additional £25 million in funding for community protection, totaling £58 million this year. This funding will enhance security measures at synagogues, schools, and community centers across the nation.

On Wednesday, two men aged 76 and 34 were injured during the Golders Green incident and are currently receiving medical care. Police have identified the attacker as Essa Suleiman, a 45-year-old British national with a history of violence and mental health issues.

Amid rising tensions, protests took place outside Downing Street, with demonstrators urging the government to take stronger action to protect Jewish communities.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that attacks on Jews represent an attack on Britain itself, while London Mayor Sadiq Khan stated there is “no place for antisemitism” in the city.

The police are continuing their investigation with counterterrorism officers working to gather all relevant information about the case.
