Shubman Gill Sets Sights on 2027 ODI World Cup

India’s ODI and Test captain, Shubman Gill, has stated that winning the 2027 ODI World Cup is the main goal for the national team. After coming so close to the title in 2023, he admitted that this ambition is often on his mind.

In the 2023 World Cup, India performed exceptionally well but fell short against Australia in the final. Speaking at the BCCI Naman Awards in Mumbai, held on March 15, Gill expressed that the team is still motivated by their near victory.

“Definitely, it does cross my mind. That is the ultimate goal,” Gill shared on Star Sports when asked about the next ODI World Cup. He emphasized that the team feels they were just one step away from lifting the trophy last time and are eager for another chance.

“We felt like we were so close last time when we were here in the final in India. Having another opportunity in South Africa is exciting for us,” he added. Gill believes that winning a World Cup in any format is the highest achievement, and it regularly occupies his thoughts.

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, taking place in October and November.

Can India Achieve a White-Ball Treble?

India is currently enjoying tremendous success in ICC tournaments, having won several major titles recently. They claimed the T20 World Cup in 2024, followed by the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, and successfully defended their T20 title in 2026—making them the first team to do so.

With these victories under their belt, India has the chance to make history by completing a white-ball treble if they win the 2027 ODI World Cup. If Gill and his team manage to secure the 50-over title, they could be the first team to hold all three major ICC white-ball titles simultaneously in the same tournament cycle.
