New Zealand Captain Weighs In on India’s Varun Chakravarthy Ahead of T20 World Cup Final

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has shared his thoughts on India’s enigmatic spinner Varun Chakravarthy, emphasizing that he could be a significant threat during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad. Santner pointed out that Chakravarthy is merely one strong performance away from turning the game in his favor.

Chakravarthy’s recent game against the England team in the semi-finals raised some eyebrows, as his bowling conceded a high number of runs. However, in a press conference before the final, Santner reassured that the New Zealand team is not discounting the Indian spinner’s capabilities.

“For any bowler, a flat pitch can be tough. When the conditions favor spin or seam, it can become challenging for batters. But on a flat surface, it’s a different story. I believe that on any given day, a bowler can end up with high numbers,” Santner explained.

He went on to highlight Chakravarthy’s talent, saying, “Varun needs to remember that he is still a fantastic bowler. He’s just one match away from changing how things are going. Whether you’re a bowler or a batter, if you’re struggling, it only takes one good game to bounce back. It’s all about stepping up and showing what you can do.”

Varun Chakravarthy: The Mystery Spinner’s Journey

Chakravarthy arrived at the T20 World Cup as India’s key player. Before this tournament, he was the leading wicket-taker among bowlers from Full Member nations, proving his importance in India’s plans for limited-overs cricket.

He started the tournament strong, taking 12 wickets in four group matches, demonstrating his skills with his unique carrom balls and googlies while maintaining control in the middle overs. However, his performance took a dip during the Super 8 stage against teams like South Africa and Zimbabwe, where runs came more freely. His economy rate climbed to 10.16, with only a quarter of his deliveries resulting in dot balls.

The semi-final was particularly tough for him. An expensive outing saw him finish with figures of 1 for 64 in four overs—setting a record for the highest runs conceded by an Indian bowler in T20 World Cup history. England’s Jacob Bethell notably scored 41 runs off just 13 balls against him, marking a challenging day for Chakravarthy.

What’s Next for India?

Despite the struggles, India is not likely to make drastic changes ahead of the final. The team has consistently relied on a stable bowling unit, featuring Chakravarthy and Axar Patel as the primary spin duo.

If adjustments are deemed necessary, Kuldeep Yadav stands out as a possible replacement. With a commendable record against New Zealand, he has taken eight wickets in seven T20I matches with an economical rate.

However, dropping Chakravarthy so close to a World Cup final could be a risky decision. India has placed its trust in him throughout the tournament, fully aware of how quickly a mystery spinner can alter the game’s dynamics.

As they face formidable hitters like Tim Seifert and Finn Allen, Chakravarthy’s response to his recent challenges may play a pivotal role in how the final unfolds in Ahmedabad.
