Mexican President Considers Legal Action Against Elon Musk
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Tuesday that her government is contemplating legal steps against Elon Musk. This comes after Musk alleged, without providing evidence, that Sheinbaum had connections to drug cartels following the death of a prominent cartel leader.
Musk made his claim in a post on X, triggered by an old video where Sheinbaum spoke about cartel violence and denied plans to restart a strong military response. “Returning to the war against the narco is not an option. First, because it is outside the framework of the law,” Sheinbaum stated in the video.
In response to Musk’s allegation, which originated from a user who questioned her integrity, he said, “She’s just saying what her cartel bosses tell her to say,” insinuating that she’s under pressure from criminal groups.
Sheinbaum addressed Musk’s comments in her daily press conference, mentioning that the government is assessing whether to take legal action and that lawyers are reviewing the case.
The dispute arose after Mexican security forces captured and killed Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho,” the head of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel. This operation led to violence, including roadblocks and arson across parts of Mexico.
When asked whether this incident meant a shift toward a stricter security strategy, Sheinbaum denied this, emphasizing that the government’s goal is peace, not warfare. “Detaining a suspected criminal can lead to such violence, but we aim for peace,” she explained.
Luisa Alcalde, president of the ruling MORENA party, also criticized Musk, advising him to use his influence to discuss issues like drug consumption and its repercussions. “Wealth does not give moral authority,” she said, highlighting the importance of lives lost in this crisis.
In Mexico, over 130,000 individuals are reported missing, with much of the ongoing violence tied to drug cartels that sell drugs to the U.S. while acquiring firearms from across the border.
