US Sends Aircraft Carrier Amid Iranian Threats of Retaliation

US Naval Strike Group Deploys to Middle East Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

PARIS: The United States has announced that a naval strike group, including an aircraft carrier, has been sent to the waters of the Middle East. This move comes as Iran has issued warnings that it is prepared to respond strongly to any American attacks, especially amidst a crackdown on recent protests against its government.

A rights organization based in the US reported on Monday that close to 6,000 people have died in the unrest sparked by the Iranian authorities. However, they caution that the real number of casualties could be even higher.

The protests began in late December over economic issues and quickly evolved into a widespread movement against the Iranian government, leading to significant demonstrations starting around January 8. Rights groups have accused the Iranian authorities of responding with extraordinary violence, including firing at protesters during a major internet blackout that has now lasted for 18 days—the longest enforced by Iran to date.

The Iranian clerical leadership, established after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, still holds power despite the protests. Many opposition figures believe that external intervention might be the best way to achieve change in the country.

US President Donald Trump has previously indicated a willingness to intervene, mentioning last week that a “massive fleet” is being sent to the area as a precaution. The deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group significantly enhances the US military presence in the region.

While the US has been involved, at least briefly, in conflicts involving Iran—such as the 12-day war with Israel in June—Trump has recently tempered his military intervention rhetoric, though he hasn’t completely dismissed the idea.

According to US Central Command, the Lincoln strike group is in the region to help promote security and stability.
