NEW DELHI: On Monday, Sergio Gor, the new US ambassador to India, emphasized the importance of India in US foreign policy during his speech at the US Embassy in New Delhi. He reassured that the two countries are actively working together to finalize a trade deal and mentioned that India is set to join Pax Silica, a US initiative aimed at creating a secure global supply chain for semiconductors and AI technology.

Gor, who previously worked closely with former President Donald Trump, pointed out the strong ties between the US and India, saying the relationship is solidly established at the highest levels. He highlighted that despite recent tensions, both nations share significant interests and will work as true partners. “No partner is more essential than India,” he stated, outlining his goals for a strong partnership moving forward.

He also provided an update on ongoing trade negotiations, stating, “We continue to actively engage on this front,” and indicated that a call concerning trade talks would take place shortly. Over the past year, discussions around a bilateral trade deal have faced challenges, particularly over US demands regarding tariffs and access to Indian agricultural markets.

Furthermore, Gor announced that India would soon be officially invited to join Pax Silica, a group aimed at securing various supply chains while promoting technological advancements. This initiative has already welcomed countries like Japan, South Korea, and the UK.

The new ambassador expressed his intention to enhance cooperation not only in trade but also in critical areas like security, counter-terrorism, energy, and education. While he hinted at a potential visit by Trump to India, he didn’t specify a timeline, expressing hope for the near future.

Gor also reflected on Trump’s fond memories of his 2020 visit to India and the friendship shared with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He thanked the people of India for their warm welcome and acknowledged their resilience and innovation.

In addition to trade disagreements, the relationship has faced other challenges, including differing perspectives on recent conflicts in South Asia. Despite these hurdles, Gor’s remarks signal a desire to strengthen US-India ties through mutual respect and collaboration.
