U.S. Joins Latin American Nations in Support of Bolivia’s Government
The United States, alongside other countries in the Shield of the Americas, has voiced strong opposition to ongoing efforts in Bolivia aimed at destabilizing President Rodrigo Paz’s government. The statement released on Friday emphasized support for Bolivia’s democratically elected leadership and condemned attempts to create chaos, such as false road blockades that hinder the delivery of essential supplies like food and medicine.
The statement noted, “Mob rule cannot replace the decision that a majority of Bolivians made at the ballot box.” It further called for accountability for those funding protests with illicit money from drug trafficking and other crimes, encouraging citizens with legitimate concerns to engage in dialogue rather than falling for manipulative tactics.
The joint statement was made public by the U.S. State Department along with allies including Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, and others. It comes amid rising tensions in La Paz, where mass protests have led to significant disruptions and economic distress due to inflation and fuel price hikes.
Recent events have seen Bolivian Defense Minister Marcelo Salinas resign during this turbulent period. President Paz has faced backlash after supporting a land reform bill aimed at boosting agribusiness, which many Indigenous farmers believe could lead to evictions. Additionally, the removal of fuel subsidies has drastically increased prices, leading to complaints from drivers about poor fuel quality damaging their vehicles.
Former President Evo Morales, who led Bolivia for 14 years, is now calling for early elections. He stated that President Paz has two choices: “a suicidal decision like militarization or…an election in the next 90 days.”
While Morales has been avoiding arrest related to serious charges, he remains a prominent figure in Bolivian politics. Meanwhile, U.S. officials, including War Secretary Pete Hegseth, have condemned attempts to disrupt Paz’s administration. Hegseth stressed that the U.S. will not stand back as Bolivia confronts threats from drug cartels and other criminal organizations, reinforcing their commitment to stability and security in the region.
