New Zealand is facing a tough challenge in the first Test match at Lord’s, as they struggle to chase down England’s total. After the second day, they find themselves at 36 for 3 while needing 254 runs to win.

England’s bowlers had a strong day, proving effective on a pitch that favored seam movement. Early wickets left New Zealand in a difficult position, with the loss of Kane Williamson for just 18 being a significant setback.

Day 2 Highlights: England vs. New Zealand, 1st Test

The day began well for England, thanks to Ollie Robinson, who made an impressive return to Test cricket. After a two-year break, he took five wickets and helped bowl New Zealand out for a mere 113, giving England a 27-run lead.

Kyle Jamieson showed some fight for New Zealand, scoring an unbeaten 38 after his five-wicket haul against England in their first innings. His efforts included three remarkable sixes that gave the visitors a bit of hope after England dismissed Glenn Phillips and Nathan Smith.

Nathan Smith Shines, But England Leads

New Zealand’s bowling in their second innings had its struggles. They missed key chances, such as when Rachin Ravindra dropped a catch that allowed Ben Duckett to score 33. Debutant Emilio Gay stood out with a solid 57, helping build England’s total.

Even though New Zealand managed to get a couple of quick wickets, including Harry Brook and Ben Stokes for ducks, and Joe Root lbw for just eight runs, they couldn’t stop England from increasing their lead. Nathan Smith was the standout bowler for New Zealand, finishing with impressive stats of 6 wickets for 70 runs off 17 overs.

Ultimately, England was all out for 226, setting a target of 254 runs for New Zealand. With the hosts in a strong position and New Zealand’s batting lineup shaky, the third day could prove critical. The visitors will need something exceptional to turn the game around, while England eyes victory in their historic 150th Test match at this iconic venue.
