Saffron: A Natural Mood Booster?

Recent insights from Dr. Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist from Amen Clinics in California, suggest that saffron, a spice commonly used in dishes like paella and herbal teas, may act as a natural antidepressant. This spice, renowned for its vibrant color and unique flavor, has shown potential for improving mood and alleviating symptoms of depression.

In a recent interview, Dr. Amen shared his passion for saffron, mentioning its significance in Lebanese and Middle Eastern cuisine. He even referred to a piece of folklore from Iran: if someone is feeling too happy, they might just have had some saffron!

Research highlights that a daily dose of around 30 milligrams of saffron can be just as effective as traditional antidepressants in clinical studies. Unlike many common antidepressants, which can sometimes lead to decreased sexual function, saffron appears to have the opposite effect, potentially enhancing it.

Dr. Amen pointed out that, as a psychiatrist, he’s cautious about maintaining his patients’ love lives, and saffron’s benefits in this area are exciting. Besides mood enhancement, saffron may also contribute to better memory and focus and help reduce the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Participants in studies reported significant relief from PMS symptoms after using saffron for eight to twelve weeks.

A comprehensive review involving over 17,000 patients indicated that saffron is particularly effective in reducing symptoms of depression. The analysis assessed various supplements and found saffron to have a notable antidepressant effect.

While cooking with saffron is common, achieving the necessary dose for mood improvement might be challenging through food alone. Thus, saffron supplements, available in capsules or powders, may be recommended, with 30 milligrams per day being a standard dosage.

However, it’s important to remember that long-term effects of saffron supplements are still being studied. Although they can offer numerous benefits, taking high doses for extended periods might pose risks, including anxiety and digestive issues. Therefore, it’s advisable for anyone considering saffron supplements to consult a healthcare professional first.

In conclusion, saffron may not only spice up your meals but could also provide a natural way to support mental health.
