SFL Missions Inc. Successfully Launches Latest HawkEye 360 Satellites
SFL Missions Inc. has proudly announced the successful launch of six new radio frequency (RF) detection and geolocation satellites for HawkEye 360, based in Herndon, Virginia. These new spacecraft, part of the HawkEye 360 Clusters 15 and 16, have been delivered to HawkEye 360’s facility for final assembly, integration, and rigorous testing.
In total, HawkEye 360 has now deployed 48 operational RF geolocation satellites using SFL’s spacecraft technology. The recent launches occurred with Cluster 15 taking off on October 20 as part of the SpaceX Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Following closely, Cluster 16 was launched on October 23 aboard a Rocket Lab Electron rocket from the Māhia Spaceport in New Zealand. Following the launches, ground control has successfully established communication with all six satellites, confirming their operational status.
To enhance capabilities, SFL Missions designed an upgraded version of their trusted 30-kg DEFIANT spacecraft specifically for these clusters. A standout feature of both clusters is a new switchable antenna and radio system that enables the satellites to collect and send down targeted RF signal data simultaneously. This means that real-time data can now be transmitted directly to ground stations.
Additionally, HawkEye 360 Cluster 15 features innovative drag sail deorbiting technology. Each satellite is equipped with a drag sail that will deploy at the end of its mission, effectively reducing space debris. This technology was successfully demonstrated during the 2017 CanX-7 mission.
Dr. Robert E. Zee, CEO and Founder of SFL Missions, expressed pride in the launches, stating, “The HawkEye 360 Cluster 15 and 16 launches showcase our unique ability to quickly innovate on proven satellite designs to meet the growing demands of our clients.”
HawkEye 360 is recognized as a leader in signals intelligence, being the first to employ formation-flying microsatellites for both maritime and terrestrial RF signal detection. This crucial data supports various sectors such as maritime safety, emergency response, national security, and spectrum mapping, with applications like Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) and Electronic Intelligence (ELINT).
Accurate RF signal geolocation relies on precise attitude control and the formation flying of multiple satellites. SFL Missions is noted for its cost-effective attitude determination and formation-flying technologies, positioning itself as a unique player in the microspace industry.
HawkEye 360 is also among the first to utilize SFL’s Flex Production Program, tailored to meet the ambitious needs of NewSpace companies. This program allows customers to contract SFL for initial satellite development, with options for subsequent mass production either at their facilities or through third parties.
With a rich history of over 479 cumulative years of experience in space, SFL Missions continues to build a portfolio of nano, micro, and small satellites, utilizing proven bus designs from 3 to 500 kilograms for a variety of purposes, including Earth observation, communications, environmental monitoring, and scientific research.
