Neymar Faces Two-Match Ban for On-Field Incident
Brazilian soccer star Neymar has been banned for two matches by the sports tribunal in his country after an incident during a match against Bahia. During the game, Neymar was seen covering his mouth while arguing with a Bahia player, which led to the tribunal’s decision.
This ruling was made on Wednesday and is connected to a protocol called the ‘Vinicius Law.’ This law is named after Vinicius Junior, a forward for Real Madrid, who had previously accused an opponent of racial abuse during a Champions League match. The opposing player had also covered his mouth during that confrontation.
As a result of the ban, Neymar will miss three matches in total. One of those bans is due to accumulating yellow cards, while the other two arise from the mouth-covering incident. His first match missed will be against Palmeiras in the Brazilian league on Wednesday, and he is not expected to return until late November.
Neymar and his team, Santos, have the option to appeal the two-match suspension.
The 34-year-old has struggled with injuries this year but has still managed to score eight goals in 15 appearances in Brazil’s Serie A. His performances earlier this year led to his inclusion in Brazil’s national team, although injuries limited his participation in the recent World Cup, where he played in two matches and scored a penalty against Norway. Unfortunately, Brazil was knocked out in the Round of 16 after losing to a European team.
Following the World Cup, Neymar announced his decision to step back from international play. He expressed pride in his achievements with the national team, with a record of 80 goals in 130 appearances. “I think my time with the national team has already passed,” he said. “I made history there, and I’m very happy about it.” His remarks came after an emotional interview where he stated, “I tried, I tried. Now it’s over.”
