Appeal for Support Amid Ongoing Conflict
As fierce battles continue in the eastern regions of Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia, a Ukrainian commander has called for increased military support from the United States. Major Oleh Shyriaiev, who leads the 225th Battalion in northern Ukraine, made his request for Tomahawk missiles to the Trump administration during an exclusive interview conducted from a hidden location on Ukraine’s front lines.
Major Shyriaiev emphasized the importance of long-range missiles for Ukraine’s defense. He described the current conflict as the most significant war since World War II, asserting that Ukraine’s struggle is about more than just resistance to Russian aggression—it is about achieving true independence from Russia, which has sought to keep Ukraine under its influence since the nation became independent in 1991.
“For over 300 years, our fight against Russia has been a crucial opportunity for us to gain our independence,” Shyriaiev stated confidently.
Political Turmoil and Military Strategy
In addition to combat on the battlefield, Ukraine is facing internal challenges as top officials in President Zelenskyy’s government resign amid a $100 million corruption scandal. These developments are impacting the government’s ability to lead effectively in wartime.
Shyriaiev noted the strategic importance of receiving U.S. long-range Tomahawk missiles, which could enhance Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian forces and create a stronger position in any future negotiations. An expert suggested that such support would not only increase costs for Russia but also empower Ukraine and its allies to pursue peace more effectively.
Former President Trump has previously hinted at the possibility of supplying Ukraine with these missiles, although he later stated that the U.S. would not send them at this time.
The Reality of Warfare
Tomahawk missiles boast a range of about 1,550 miles and can hit targets deep inside enemy territory, making them a valuable asset for Ukraine, which currently lacks a navy. However, even without these advanced weapons, Major Shyriaiev remains optimistic about Ukraine’s military capabilities.
He expressed confidence in his troops’ ability to defend the country, regardless of the specific weapons they have. “We will continue to protect our sovereignty with all available resources,” he said.
Currently stationed in Sumy, a crucial area bordering Russia, Shyriaiev has witnessed both sides making gains, albeit slowly. He described the Russian tactics as overwhelming, with numerous troops being sent to the front lines. He believes that even if Russia manages to capture towns like Pokrovsk, the cost in lost soldiers will be significant, impacting their overall combat effectiveness.
As the struggle continues, Ukraine’s push for independence and stability remains at the forefront, with hopes for increased international support fueling their efforts.
