Trump and Modi Maintain Active Dialogue Amid Ongoing Trade Negotiations, White House Reports

Trump and Modi Discuss Trade Relations

U.S. President Donald Trump frequently communicates with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with trade discussions ongoing between both nations, according to the White House.

On November 4, 2025, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt informed the press that President Trump holds Prime Minister Modi in high regard and that their conversations are regular. “The President and his trade team are engaged in important discussions with India,” she stated.

Recently, Trump expressed his desire for a trade deal with India during a visit to South Korea. This comes after a period of tension between the two countries, marked by Trump’s decision to increase tariffs on Indian imports to 50%. This action was taken in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

In light of the U.S. sanctions on Russia’s main crude oil exporters, Rosneft and Lukoil, Indian refiners have scaled back their imports of Russian oil.

As U.S.-India relations navigate these challenges, both leaders appear committed to finding common ground.
