Rise in German Citizenship Applications Following Change in Laws
A recent survey reveals that many people applying for German citizenship are choosing to keep their original nationality. In 2024, Germany updated its laws to allow dual citizenship, resulting in a significant increase in applications. However, this change does not benefit Indian applicants since India does not permit dual nationality.
An Indian government statement clarified, “The Constitution of India does not allow for holding Indian citizenship along with the citizenship of another country.”
According to a study by the Mediendienst Integration research group, over 85% of new citizens opted to retain their original citizenship.
Choosing German Citizenship for Practical Reasons
For individuals like Ashish Kumar, a 56-year-old who assists expats with home purchases in Germany, acquiring German citizenship became a practical choice. Although he had the opportunity to take German citizenship years ago, he hesitated due to his pride in his Indian identity. However, frequent travel with his German wife and son led him to reconsider. A German passport would save him from the hassle of constant queues and paperwork.
“My parents are still in India, so it wasn’t an easy decision for me. But frustration ultimately pushed me to take German citizenship,” Kumar shared. He hopes that one day India will allow dual citizenship, especially for the sake of his son, so he can maintain ties to India. Sadly, when he applied for German citizenship, he learned he would need to renounce his Indian nationality.
Another applicant, Madhav, 44, who works in the tech field, expressed that having dual citizenship would help him reclaim ancestral land in India, saying, “That would be nice.”
As Germany continues to adapt its citizenship policies, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact individuals and families navigating the complexities of nationality.
