Diana Shnaider Shocks Top Seed Sabalenka at Roland Garros 2026

In a stunning turn of events at the 2026 Roland Garros, Diana Shnaider pulled off one of the biggest surprises by defeating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka with scores of 3-6, 7-5, 6-0, securing her spot in her first Grand Slam semi-final.

Shnaider seemed on the verge of defeat as she trailed 3-6, 3-5 in the second set, with Sabalenka just a couple of points away from winning. However, the Russian made a remarkable comeback, turning the match around completely.

Incredible Comeback

From the brink of elimination, Shnaider broke Sabalenka’s serve six times in a row, leading to an unforgettable victory. This win marks her first career defeat of a top-ranked player, adding to the significance of her achievement as it is only her second win against a top-10 opponent.

Before facing Shnaider in the quarter-finals, Sabalenka had not lost a single set in the tournament, making this upset even more impressive. Shnaider had already made headlines by defeating Grand Slam champion Madison Keys in the fourth round, making her victory a career-defining moment on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Facing the Challenge

Before their match, Shnaider had never played against Sabalenka on the WTA Tour. Although she appeared calm during the match, she later shared her nerves about facing the top player for the first time and her initial struggles with the windy conditions. Nevertheless, she maintained her focus by taking points one at a time, committed to fighting for each ball.

“Honestly, I’m speechless. I’m super happy. Today was challenging because of the wind. It was my first time playing Aryna, and I was nervous. The first set was all about adjusting to her game and the conditions,” Shnaider said.

“I just tried to stay focused on each point and not get distracted by the score. I kept reminding myself, ‘It’s tough out here. She’s the World No. 1.’ I wanted to give it my all until the end,” she added.

“I fought for every point, ran for every ball, and aimed to keep one more shot in play,” Shnaider concluded.

Stay tuned for further updates on this thrilling tournament!
