Brief: Major Uranium Smuggling Attempt Foiled in Georgia

Authorities in Georgia recently disrupted a significant nuclear smuggling operation involving several Chinese nationals. The State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) reported that three Chinese individuals were arrested in Tbilisi while attempting to buy approximately 4.4 pounds of uranium from the black market for $400,000.

The suspects intended to move the nuclear material to China via Russia. Video footage released by the agency showed security personnel seizing bottles believed to contain uranium during the arrests.

One suspect was found to be living in Georgia illegally and allegedly took the lead in trying to secure the radioactive material, even recruiting experts from other countries for assistance. Other members of the group reportedly coordinated the operation from China.

The group was apprehended while discussing the details of this illegal transaction. The SSSG has not disclosed specific details about when the arrests took place or the identities of the individuals involved.

This incident follows a similar case in July, where authorities apprehended a foreign national and a Georgian citizen accused of planning to sell uranium valued at $3 million. Officials stated that this material could potentially be used for building explosive devices or conducting terrorist acts.
