Trump Expresses Desire to Help China Amid Trade Tensions
WASHINGTON: On Sunday, President Donald Trump emphasized that the United States aims to assist rather than harm China, a statement that comes after his recent threats of imposing a hefty 100% tariff on the country.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared, “The U.S.A. wants to help China, not hurt it!!!” He acknowledged the expertise of “respected President Xi (Jinping),” noting that Xi wouldn’t want his nation to face economic downturns.
This statement follows Trump’s comments from Friday, where he indicated plans to introduce new tariffs starting from November 1, citing China’s strict export controls on the rare-earths sector as the motivation behind this decision. These remarks led to a dip in Wall Street stocks, raising concerns that the trade conflicts between the U.S. and China might escalate again.
In response, Beijing rejected Trump’s claims, labeling his tariff threat as a “typical example of ‘double standards’.” A statement from China’s Ministry of Commerce criticized the U.S. approach, asserting that raising tariffs is not the best way to engage with China.
Currently, Chinese goods face a 30% tariff due to earlier levies imposed by Trump, alleging that China facilitated the fentanyl trade and adopted unfair trade practices. Conversely, China has imposed retaliatory tariffs set at 10%.
The issue of rare earth materials remains a significant challenge in ongoing trade discussions. These elements are essential for manufacturing various products, including smartphones, electric vehicles, and military equipment, but are predominantly sourced and refined in China.
