Medicare’s New GLP-1 Bridge Program Provides Wegovy and Zepbound for Just $50 Monthly!

Novo Nordisk to Lower Prices for Weight-Loss Drugs

In a significant move, Novo Nordisk has announced plans to reduce the list prices of its diabetes and weight-loss medications, Ozempic and Wegovy, in the U.S. This change comes as part of a broader effort to make these treatments more accessible.

A new federal pilot program called Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is set to launch on July 1, aimed at assisting seniors struggling with obesity. Under this program, eligible Medicare beneficiaries will have access to popular weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound for just $50 a month, as reported by the Associated Press.

The drugs included in this initiative are FDA-approved for weight loss and consist of Eli Lilly’s Foundayo tablets, Zepbound KwikPens, and Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy injections and tablets. This pilot program will run until the end of 2027 and marks the first time that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s) will be covered by insurance specifically for weight loss purposes.

Before this development, seniors looking for GLP-1 treatments solely for weight loss faced monthly costs ranging from $1,350 to $1,650 for Wegovy and approximately $1,086 for Zepbound. Although some cash-pay options were available from the manufacturers, they still left many families struggling with affordability.

To qualify for the program, older adults must either have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more, or a BMI of 27 alongside certain health conditions like past heart issues or prediabetes. Those already covered for other medical conditions, such as diabetes or sleep apnea, will not be eligible.

Currently, over 70 million Americans are enrolled in Medicare, with around 10 million of them being classified as overweight or obese. According to Jamey Millar, an executive at Novo Nordisk, this program offers a vital opportunity for older Americans seeking affordable treatment options.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, who oversees the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, expressed hope that the program would provide immediate relief to seniors while also collecting data for potential long-term coverage solutions.

Despite the positive outlook, some experts warn that older patients could experience more side effects when taking new medications. Dr. Micah Eimer, a cardiology professor at Northwestern University, pointed out that older adults already on certain medications might face increased risks of fainting and dizziness.

Overall, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program represents a major step forward for seniors needing help with obesity, transforming the landscape of available treatment options.
