Ali Khamenei’s Final Farewell Scheduled for July 9 Amid Heightened Security in Iran

Iran Prepares for Supreme Leader Khamenei’s Long-Awaited Burial

Tehran is gearing up for the burial of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on July 9, over four months after his passing. Authorities are activating the Basij militia and organizing a large-scale security operation in anticipation of what they expect will be a notable public gathering.

The delay in Khamenei’s funeral has raised eyebrows, as Islamic customs typically demand a prompt burial without chemical embalming. Experts suggest that his remains have been kept in refrigerated storage, as Islamic law permits exceptions for high-ranking officials like a Supreme Leader.

Dr. Mohammed Omar, a counterterrorism expert, noted that Iran’s morgues frequently retain bodies for extended periods. He explained that Khamenei’s remains, affected by a U.S. airstrike, may have been difficult to present publicly, prompting the unusual delay.

As Iran prepares for the upcoming ceremonies, the government is promoting the funeral not just as a farewell but also as a demonstration of national strength, emphasizing the slogan “We Must Avenge.” Officials anticipate a historic turnout, with projections suggesting at least one million attendees, which they hope will showcase a strong show of support for the Islamic Republic.

The schedule for the event includes public viewings on July 6 and a funeral procession expected to draw between 15 to 20 million people. Another procession is planned for the following day in Qom, a city with religious significance in Shiite Islam.

Despite the grand plans, analysts like Dr. Mohammed warn that the exaggerated turnout numbers are likely meant to convey a message of resilience, especially in light of recent challenges the regime has faced.

Security preparations are also being ramped up, with the Basij and the IRGC coordinating logistics to manage the expected crowds effectively. However, key international figures will be notably absent from the funeral, possibly signaling a degree of isolation for the Iranian regime.

As authorities finalize their plans, the focus remains on presenting a unified front at this significant event, despite underlying tensions and challenges facing the nation.
