India A vs Australia A ODI in Nagpur Draws 24,000 Spectators Amid Empty Stands for Test Match

Fans Prefer India A Match Over Test Series

On Sunday, October 5, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad was nearly deserted for the Test match between India and West Indies. Meanwhile, a thrilling India A vs. Australia A game in Kanpur pulled in a crowd of over 24,000 eager fans. This surprising turnout showcased the growing enthusiasm for cricket among younger players who are still aiming for a spot on the national team.

Rajiv Shukla, vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), expressed his delight at the large crowd in Kanpur, posting on social media to highlight the fans’ passion for the game. Shukla noted that matches featuring India A don’t usually attract such huge audiences, making this event particularly special for the local cricket community.

The excitement in Kanpur, however, contrasted sharply with the recent criticism aimed at the BCCI regarding the scheduling of the Test series. Following the Asia Cup Final, the Indian team quickly shifted gears to host the West Indies, but the opening Test in Ahmedabad attracted minimal interest. Critics have voiced their concerns about holding Test matches in venues that historically do not cater to red-ball cricket fans.

One cricket enthusiast shared their opinion online, suggesting that the BCCI should hold Test matches in locations known for enthusiastic crowds. They supported Virat Kohli’s idea of establishing certain “fixed venues” for Test matches to avoid empty stadiums, especially when facing lower-tier teams. Cities like Chennai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru could become mainstays for Test cricket.

While the BCCI has used a variety of venues for Test matches over the years, there is ongoing debate about whether limiting locations would be beneficial. Virat Kohli previously advocated for this approach, emphasizing the need for consistency for international teams visiting India.

In contrast to the Test series, the India A vs. Australia A games have been competitive and entertaining. In their recent series, India A managed to secure a 2-1 victory, culminating in a tense final match where they chased down a target of 317 runs.

Prabhsimran Singh played a remarkable innings, scoring a century to lead his team to victory. Australia A struggled at first, losing wickets early, but a strong partnership later in the game gave them a respectable total of 316 runs. Despite some challenges, the bowlers from India A played a crucial role in restricting Australia A and ensuring a thrilling win for their side.

As India A took to the field, the excitement was palpable. Openers Prabhsimran Singh and Abhishek Sharma got their team off to a strong start, scoring quickly and maintaining a healthy run rate. Even after some middle-order setbacks, the lower-order batsmen held their nerve, securing the win in a nail-biting finish.

This thrilling match not only highlighted the rising talent in Indian cricket but also showed the fans’ enthusiasm for all formats of the game, even at the developmental level.
