Rubio Responds to Bolsonaro’s Coup Conviction

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that the U.S. will take action following the conviction of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for attempting to stage a coup after losing the 2022 election. However, Rubio did not specify what measures might be taken.

On social media platform X, Rubio criticized Brazil’s Supreme Court judges, saying they unfairly sentenced Bolsonaro to prison. He described the situation as a “witch hunt” and promised that the U.S. would respond to what he called political persecution.

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry responded, calling Rubio’s comments an attack on Brazilian authority and stated that the country would not be intimidated by the U.S. Bolsonaro was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for trying to halt President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking office.

Bolsonaro, who had a close relationship with former U.S. President Donald Trump, has also faced criticism from Trump regarding the Brazilian judicial system. Trump has suggested tariffs on Brazilian goods in response to the legal actions against Bolsonaro.

Moreover, Rubio announced visa revocations for Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and others involved in the case, labeling their actions as a political attack. Previously, the U.S. Treasury Department had sanctioned the judge for allegedly restricting freedom of expression.

Bolsonaro’s son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, anticipates further U.S. sanctions against Brazilian justices involved in the case, warning that they may face repercussions under U.S. law if they continue to follow Justice de Moraes.

This unfolding situation highlights tensions between Brazil and the U.S. over judicial actions and political accountability.
