Colombia Advances with Narrow Win Over DR Congo in World Cup Match

On Tuesday, Colombia clinched a spot in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against DR Congo in Guadalajara. Daniel Munoz scored the match’s only goal in the second half, ensuring Colombia’s advancement with a game to spare.

Colombia dominated possession and created numerous chances but struggled to break down a spirited DR Congo defense, largely thanks to an impressive performance by goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. Munoz finally delivered the breakthrough in the 76th minute, transforming tension into relief for the Colombian side.

With this win, Colombia now has six points from two matches in Group K. Their advancement is assured, regardless of what happens in other games. Portugal also qualified earlier in the day, securing a decisive 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, setting the stage for a future clash between the two teams for group supremacy.

For DR Congo, the result was disappointing, especially after they showed discipline and organization throughout the match. Although currently sitting on one point, they still have a shot at advancing if they secure a victory against Uzbekistan in their next match.

Colombia arrived in Guadalajara full of confidence following their opening 3-1 win over Uzbekistan. They quickly asserted control in this match, with James Rodriguez directing plays from midfield while Luis Diaz posed a constant threat on the wing. Jhon Arias also created several promising opportunities.

Despite their strong play, the Colombian squad faced constant resistance from Mpasi, who made several brilliant saves, thwarting efforts from Rodriguez, Diaz, and Arias. With every save, DR Congo gained confidence while Colombia’s players felt increasing pressure.

Although DR Congo didn’t threaten much offensively, they remained dangerous on counterattacks. Their compact defense forced Colombia to keep searching for openings that proved elusive.

Finally, the deadlock was broken when Juan Quintero delivered a clever pass to Munoz. Timing his run perfectly, Munoz entered the penalty area and struck a low shot that took a slight deflection, slipping past Mpasi and into the net.

The goal brought relief to the Colombian players, who realized they had faced a tougher challenge than anticipated. DR Congo attempted to respond late in the game, but Colombia maintained control to secure their second straight win of the tournament.

While Munoz’s goal was crucial, much of the post-match conversation focused on Mpasi, who recorded eight saves and played a key role in keeping DR Congo in the game for as long as possible.

This victory underscores Colombia’s strong World Cup history, having progressed beyond the group stage in their last three World Cup appearances in 2014, 2018, and now 2026.

Munoz made history as well, becoming only the second Colombian defender to score multiple goals in a single World Cup, joining Yerry Mina, who scored three times in 2018.

Although they’ve secured qualification, Colombia is aware that tougher challenges await. Their upcoming match against Portugal will likely present fewer chances, and they’ll need to capitalize on every opportunity to prove themselves as strong contenders in the knockout phase.
