Kim Jong Un’s Daughter Joins Him on Historic Visit to China

Kim Jong Un arrived in Beijing on Tuesday, marking his first trip to China in years, and he brought along his daughter, Kim Ju Ae. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) reports that she is likely to be groomed as his successor. At approximately 12 or 13 years old, this is her first international appearance, signifying her rising importance within North Korean leadership.

Dressed in a stylish black suit, Kim Ju Ae accompanied her father as they were greeted by Chinese Communist Party officials ahead of a major military parade celebrating the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender during World War II. On Wednesday, she may share the spotlight with notable leaders including Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Experts express concern about the pressure this young girl might face as she steps into the global arena. Kirsty Ketley, a parenting specialist, commented that introducing Kim Ju Ae to such a high-stakes environment at a young age may have lasting psychological effects. “She’s being prepared for a role rather than being allowed to explore her own identity,” Ketley explained. “The burden of having her future mapped out so early can be overwhelming.”

Kim and his daughter traveled to China by armored train, heading to an event that will showcase an array of military assets, including soldiers, tanks, and aircraft, all parading through Tiananmen Square. This display, which will last 70 minutes, is expected to draw significant attention.

Kim Ju Ae has previously been spotted at public events in North Korea, including a missile launch in November 2022. Reports suggest she enjoys activities like skiing and horse riding, and she is homeschooled in Pyongyang.

As experts analyze her unusual upbringing, they caution that Kim Ju Ae is missing the typical experiences of childhood. “Her world revolves around military parades instead of school and social activities,” noted Ketley, who believes this could contribute to feelings of anxiety and isolation.

Despite her introduction to the world stage, little is known about Kim Ju Ae’s exact age, although she is believed to be one of Kim Jong Un’s three children with his wife, Ri Sol-Ju. The secrecy surrounding her family life has always been tightly controlled.

Retired NBA star Dennis Rodman once unintentionally revealed Kim Ju Ae’s existence over a decade ago, calling Kim Jong Un a “good dad” after meeting her during a visit to Pyongyang.

Drawing attention to the significance of balance in her life, Ketley urged Kim Jong Un to consider his daughter’s need for normal experiences, friendships, and opportunities to face challenges, saying these are essential for emotional growth and resilience.
