PM Modi Visits the Afsluitdijk Dam During Netherlands Trip

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on a two-day visit to the Netherlands, toured the impressive Afsluitdijk dam with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. Modi praised the dam as a “groundbreaking project,” recognizing it as a significant achievement in water management.

This visit underscores the revitalized relationship between India and the Netherlands, a theme emphasized by Modi. His presence at the historic dam highlighted issues of long-term water management and climate resilience, drawing useful comparisons for India’s own infrastructure plans.

What is the Afsluitdijk Dam?

The Afsluitdijk dam stretches over 32 kilometers and has served as a crucial defense in the Netherlands’ ongoing battle against rising sea levels. It effectively separates the North Sea from the freshwater IJsselmeer lake.

The dam not only provides protection for the low-lying country but also enhances inland navigation, stores freshwater, and generates clean energy. Built mainly by hand, the dam, completed in 1930, continues to safeguard the Netherlands from flooding while facilitating both road and water traffic.

Beyond its engineering marvel, the dam represents the Netherlands’ historical struggle against water and is also tied to the country’s military past. Currently, it is undergoing a significant upgrade known as Afsluitdijk 2.0, which aims to fortify it against storms that occur once every 10,000 years. Features being added include smart water drainage systems, pathways for fish migration, and improved tidal and solar energy facilities.

Connection to Gujarat’s Kalpasar Project

During his visit, Modi took note of the dam’s features that could inspire similar initiatives in India, especially concerning Gujarat’s ambitious Kalpasar project. This project aims to create a sizeable freshwater reservoir and dam system in the Gulf of Khambhat.

The Afsluitdijk serves as a global model for flood control and land reclamation, which could provide valuable insights for the Kalpasar project. The initiative in Gujarat seeks to combine freshwater storage with tidal power generation and transportation infrastructure.

In their discussions, the two leaders welcomed a significant agreement between the Ministries of Jal Shakti in India and Infrastructure and Water Management in the Netherlands to collaborate on the Kalpasar project. This partnership aims to bolster technical cooperation, ensuring that both nations can benefit from shared knowledge in water management and infrastructure.
