Anurag Kashyap Faces Legal Trouble Over Social Media Remarks

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has come under legal scrutiny after a court in Surat ordered the police to file a criminal case against him. This action follows complaints regarding his alleged statements about the Brahmin community on social media.

On Saturday, Judicial Magistrate First Class A. S. Jani issued the directive after a private complaint was lodged by lawyer Kamlesh Raval, who is associated with the Vishva Hindu Parishad. The court found enough reasons to investigate whether Kashyap’s posts were damaging to the community’s reputation and if they might have stirred social unrest.

In its order, the court instructed that charges be filed related to inciting hostility between groups, intentional insults affecting public peace, and spreading potentially misleading information.

The controversy traces back to Kashyap’s reaction to criticisms he faced following the trailer release of his film Phule in April of the previous year. Raval, the complainant, claimed that Kashyap’s comments on X (formerly Twitter) were offensive to the Brahmin community. Moreover, it was alleged that the filmmaker continued to post controversial comments, further insulting the community and risking further division among social groups.

Raval highlighted in his complaint that figures in the entertainment industry like Kashyap hold considerable sway. He argued that their public statements can significantly influence diverse audiences.

Additionally, the complaint referenced a social media post from January 2020, where Kashyap had criticized the Union government and used terms that Raval deemed problematic for Hindus.

Reports indicate that several legal notices and summons have previously been sent to Kashyap regarding this matter. However, Raval claimed that the filmmaker did not respond, leading to a non-bailable warrant allegedly being issued against him.

Currently, Anurag Kashyap has not made any public comments about the recent court ruling.
