Tragic Drownings at Carnival’s New Island in the Bahamas
Just weeks after opening, Carnival Cruise Line’s new private island in the Bahamas, Celebration Key, has been the site of two tragic drowning incidents. A 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman lost their lives on Friday in separate situations described by the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
The police reported that the man was snorkeling at the beach when he became unresponsive. Lifeguards quickly pulled him from the water and attempted CPR, but unfortunately, he did not survive. Similarly, the woman was swimming in a pool when she also became unresponsive. Lifeguards intervened, providing CPR, but she could not be saved.
Carnival confirmed the incidents, stating that the lifeguards and medical teams reacted to emergencies in both the lagoon and the beach areas. An investigation is underway, including autopsies to determine the causes.
Carnival’s spokesperson expressed condolences, saying both guests were enjoying time with family—one aboard the Mardi Gras and the other on Carnival Elation. The cruise line’s Care Team is offering support to the families involved.
Celebration Key welcomed its first guests on July 19, introducing a $600-million destination complete with a 10-story sandcastle, thrilling waterslides, a shopping area, and an adults-only retreat. The site is expected to attract over two million visitors each year, significantly boosting the local economy.
Carnival is already working to expand the nearby cruise pier to accommodate more ships as the new destination grows in popularity. The excitement of a new tourist spot is bittersweet following these heartbreaking incidents.
