Trump Applauds India’s Possible Ban on Russian Oil Imports as a Positive Move

Trump Expresses Hope Over India’s Possible Shift from Russian Oil

On August 1, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump shared his cautious optimism regarding reports that India might cease its purchases of oil from Russia. Speaking to reporters at the White House before his departure, he remarked, “I understand India no longer is going to be buying oil from Russia. That’s what I heard. I don’t know if that’s right or not, but that’s a good step.”

This comment comes as the U.S. closely watches India’s ongoing energy and defense links with Russia, especially given the ongoing war in Ukraine. Although there has been no official word from India confirming this shift, Trump’s remarks represent the first public acknowledgment by the U.S. government regarding India’s potential policy change.

Trump has consistently voiced opposition to countries maintaining strong commercial ties with Moscow. His administration had previously imposed a 25% tariff on imports from India, pointing to trade imbalances and the country’s long-standing energy relationship with Russia.

When asked if India’s potential change in oil purchasing habits would affect the tariffs or future trade talks, Trump simply stated, “We’ll see what happens.”

The issue of Indian energy imports from Russia has sparked discussions between the U.S. and India, with past U.S. leaders encouraging India to lessen its dependence on Russian crude following the onset of the Ukraine conflict. India has defended its choices, using them as a basis for energy security and economic stability.

On Friday, Trump’s comments suggested he might be open to engaging with India if the reported policy shift becomes real. He emphasized, “That’s a good step,” hinting at possible diplomatic progress if these reports are accurate.

Previously, Indian officials have typically refrained from commenting on energy policy changes until they are fully in effect. Trump’s brief yet pointed statements seem to align with a larger foreign policy goal of encouraging countries to reassess their global partnerships in line with U.S. strategic interests. The U.S. continues to enforce extensive sanctions against Russia, making energy exports increasingly vital for the Kremlin amid the ongoing conflict.
