Shifting Gears: The Reasons Behind Suryakumar Yadav’s Departure as India’s T20I Captain

Suryakumar Yadav Steps Down as T20 Captain; Shreyas Iyer Takes Charge

In a surprising turn of events, Suryakumar Yadav has been removed from the captaincy and dropped from the T20 International squad just three months after leading India to win the T20 World Cup. This change was announced during the squad selection for upcoming tours of Ireland and England by chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new captain, marking a significant shift in India’s strategy for T20 cricket as they build towards the next World Cup cycle. Agarkar explained that the decision was influenced by Suryakumar’s recent performance and the team’s vision for the future.

“It’s a tough decision, especially after winning the World Cup. But after every World Cup, it’s common to reassess and think about the best way forward. While Suryakumar’s form has been a factor, we are also considering the long-term plan leading up to the next World Cup. Shreyas is a deserving captain,” Agarkar shared during a press conference.

Although India retained the T20 World Cup under Suryakumar’s leadership, his personal performance during the tournament was below his usual standards, scoring 242 runs in nine innings with a strike rate of 136.72. His IPL 2026 season with the Mumbai Indians also fell short, as he garnered only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76.

In contrast, Shreyas Iyer has consistently strengthened his position as both a player and a leader in recent seasons. Agarkar pointed out, “We’ve seen his growth over the past few years, leading different franchises to success.” Shreyas led the Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title in 2024 and has reached the finals with both Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings.

Shreyas has been out of T20I action since December 2023 and had been sidelined in favor of Suryakumar and Tilak Varma. He did make a brief return as an injury replacement against New Zealand earlier this year but did not get a chance to play.

His IPL performances have been impressive, scoring 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 in IPL 2025 and 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81 in IPL 2026. Agarkar emphasized that Shreyas’ experience and recent performances made him a standout choice for captaincy.

This decision from the selectors signifies a new direction for the Indian T20 team, as they prepare for future challenges. For Suryakumar, this marks a sudden end to his captaincy, which, while leading to a World Cup victory, raised questions about team dynamics and individual form.
