ENG vs IND, 4th Test: Morne Morkel on Bumrah’s Fitness and Energy Boost for Flat Pitches

Morne Morkel Dismisses Injury Concerns for Jasprit Bumrah

India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, downplayed worries regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness after the fast bowler experienced discomfort during the third day of the Test match in Manchester. Tensions rose among fans when Bumrah left the field during the second session but eventually returned just before tea.

Throughout the third session, Bumrah appeared to struggle, visibly favoring his left ankle and lacking his usual rhythm. Despite his challenges, he managed to claim a wicket, dismissing Jamie Smith, ending the day with figures of 1 for 95 over 28 overs. Mohammed Siraj also showed signs of discomfort but continued to bowl.

In a press conference following Day 3, Morkel confirmed that Bumrah twisted his ankle while descending the stairs, while Siraj experienced a similar issue on a foothole. However, Morkel noted that both bowlers seemed to be alright at this stage.

Concerns Over Bowling Speeds

A key observation from Day 3 was the noticeable drop in speed from India’s pacers. Bumrah, known for consistently bowling over 140 kph, was recorded in the 120 to 130 kph range at times. Anshul Kamboj, making his Test debut, also clocked lower speeds in the 120s, sparking worries about the fitness levels of the pace attack.

Morkel acknowledged that the coaching staff is working to understand the drop in pace. He emphasized that on flatter pitches, bowlers need extra energy to generate wicket-taking opportunities. He speculated that the bowler’s heavy workloads and the weight of the outfield might have contributed to this decline.

“On surfaces where the ball doesn’t move much, it’s crucial to maintain some energy behind the delivery,” Morkel stated. He added that it’s especially important for bowlers like Siraj, who have been working hard, and also for newcomers like Kamboj to develop into a strong fast-bowling unit.

England ended Day 3 in a strong position at 544 for 7, holding a significant 186-run lead over India.
