Air India Flight Crash: Investigation Uncovers Critical Details

A recent investigation has shed light on the tragic crash of an Air India flight that occurred on June 12, resulting in the loss of at least 260 lives.

The initial report from India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau revealed that just moments before the crash, the engine fuel control switches were turned off. This action caused a sudden loss of engine power shortly after the plane took off from Ahmedabad, where the accident took place.

The flight, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was on its way to London and was carrying 230 passengers and a crew of 12. Among the passengers were 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Sadly, the incident also resulted in the deaths of 19 people on the ground, marking it as one of India’s most severe aviation disasters.

According to the report, the aircraft experienced a rapid decline from takeoff to crash, lasting approximately 30 seconds. During this time, it was noted that both engine fuel cutoff switches were changed from the “RUN” to “CUTOFF” position almost simultaneously. However, the reasons behind this switch change remain unclear.

The fuel control switches play a crucial role in guiding fuel flow to the engines. While the switches were eventually returned to the “RUN” position, the aircraft was unable to regain sufficient power, and its descent could not be halted.

In the critical moments before the crash, one pilot declared an urgent “MAYDAY.” The cockpit voice recording revealed confusion between the two pilots, particularly when one questioned why the fuel was cut off. The other pilot denied taking such action, leading to further uncertainty.

Air India stated that it is fully cooperating with all ongoing investigations into the incident. They emphasized their commitment to working closely with regulators and authorities to ensure safety measures are met.

In the aftermath of the crash, Indian authorities have ordered thorough inspections of Air India’s entire fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which consists of 33 aircraft, to prevent any future tragedies. The black boxes, which include the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, were successfully recovered shortly after the crash and have been reviewed by investigators.

This incident has raised significant concerns about air safety, and many are now looking for answers to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
