Trend Micro Reveals Risks of Deepfake-Enabled Cybercrime

HONG KONG SAR – July 10, 2025 – Trend Micro Incorporated, a leader in global cybersecurity, has published a significant report detailing the rise of deepfake technology in cybercrime. As AI tools become more powerful and easier to access, cybercriminals are using them for various illegal activities, including business fraud, extortion, and identity theft.

The report highlights that deepfakes are no longer just a theoretical threat; they are being used in real-world scams that undermine trust in the digital space. This development brings new challenges for companies and poses a threat to their security.

Tony Lee, Head of Consulting at Trend Micro for Hong Kong and Macau, emphasized the seriousness of the situation: “AI-generated media is not just a future concern—it’s happening now. We’re witnessing impersonations of executives and breaches in hiring processes that bypass security with alarming ease. Companies need to prepare for this deepfake era, or they’ll be left behind. In a time when visuals can be misleading, rebuilding digital trust is essential.”

The research indicates that anyone can now create convincing deepfake content without special expertise. Many readily available tools are aimed at content creators and can produce realistic fakes that trick both people and organizations. These inexpensive and user-friendly tools can often evade security measures meant to verify identities.

The report outlines several alarming trends in the use of deepfakes for scams:

  • CEO Fraud: Scammers can impersonate company leaders in live meetings, making it hard to detect fraud.

  • Fake Job Applicants: AI can create false candidates who successfully navigate interviews and gain access to sensitive company systems.

  • Financial Fraud: Deepfakes are increasingly being used to bypass Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations, aiding money laundering by creating fake identities.

The underground market for cybercrime is expanding, with criminals sharing guides and tools to help each other succeed. With resources like easy-to-use face-swapping applications available, launching a deepfake-based attack has never been simpler.

As the frequency and complexity of these scams increase, businesses are urged to take proactive measures to safeguard their operations. This includes training employees on social engineering threats, scrutinizing authentication methods, and looking into technologies that can detect synthetic media.

In conclusion, the report serves as a warning for businesses. By staying informed and prepared, companies can better protect their operations and build a trusted digital environment.
