Star Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Angelo Mathews as the seasoned Sri Lankan all-rounder prepares to retire from Test cricket. Mathews is playing his final match against Bangladesh in Galle, wrapping up a remarkable career that has spanned 119 Test matches.
At 38 years old, Mathews stands as Sri Lanka’s third-highest run scorer in Test history, boasting an impressive 8,167 runs at an average of 44.62. His record includes 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries. Rohit Sharma, who also leads the Indian ODI team, reminisced about their competitive spirit dating back to their under-19 days as he shared his good wishes.
Rohit recorded a special message for Mathews, saying, “Hey Angie, congratulations on your fantastic Test career. Tomorrow marks your last Test match, and I wanted to wish you and the team the very best. We’ve had some great battles over the years since our under-19 days. You’ve been an incredible servant to your nation, and I know everyone back home appreciates everything you’ve done.”
Additionally, he expressed his hopes for Mathews’ next chapter, saying, “It’s a rare achievement what you’ve done, so congratulations once more. I wish you and your family all the best for your retirement. Enjoy it, and we’ll see you on the other side!”
Mathews has been pivotal in major moments for Sri Lanka, notably during their historic series win in England in 2014. He played a stellar innings of 160 and also took four wickets in a crucial second Test, helping secure a 100-run victory. His remarkable performance earned him both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series titles.
As Mathews steps away from the longest format of the game, his contributions to Sri Lankan cricket will surely be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
