New Delhi: Speaker Invites TMC Leader for Meeting on Party Split
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has scheduled a meeting with Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), to discuss the ongoing split within the party. The meeting is set for June 19 at 5 p.m. in Parliament House.
TMC sources have confirmed that the party received an email from the Speaker’s office regarding this meeting. Abhishek will be traveling to Delhi for the discussion.
This development arises from a demand by 20 rebel TMC MPs who wish to be recognized as a separate group after merging with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India. Speaker Birla intends to hear from both factions before making any decisions.
Initially, the Speaker’s office contacted Abhishek on Monday around 2 p.m. to meet him at 4 p.m. However, at that time, Abhishek was being questioned by the Criminal Investigation Department in Kolkata regarding various cases against him. Given the circumstances, Birla’s office rescheduled the meeting for Friday.
On June 10, Abhishek had written to Birla, requesting that no recognition be granted to any separate faction, arguing that the Constitution does not allow the formation of a separate group within an existing political party.
