Wildlife Enthusiast in Hot Water for Allegedly Attacking Bystanders to Snatch Baby Seagull

In an unsettling turn of events, a Belfast woman finds herself embroiled in legal turmoil following an alleged assault on well-meaning bystanders who attempted to rescue a baby seagull she had captured on August 14. Angela Wildman, aged 58, purportedly struck at those trying to liberate the waterfowl from her sports bag, employing not just her fists but a milk carton and an extended mop wielded with fervor.

In court, Wildman faced a slew of charges, including common assault, possession of an offensive weapon in public, disorderly behavior, and resisting an officer’s authority. Despite the gravity of the accusations, she staunchly denied the claims, asserting her innocence amidst a cacophony of courtroom proceedings, as reported by the BBC.

Her defense attorney, Damien Trainor, painted a picture of Wildman as a solitary figure—a wildlife enthusiast devoted to nurturing birds, living a quiet life punctuated by feeding and caring for her feathered friends. “She keeps to herself, feeds her birds, and does her shopping,” Trainor recounted, emphasizing her unassuming nature.

However, witnesses recounted a different reality. Officers testified in court that individuals attempting to free the distressed creature were met with aggressive retaliation, being assailed with both a long-handled mop and a large milk carton—a surreal scene that unfolded in the heart of south Belfast.

One unfortunate passerby reportedly bore the brunt of Wildman’s fury, experiencing an assault that left them bewildered and a bit worse for wear. When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they encountered a defiant Wildman, reportedly combative and unyielding as they sought to place her under arrest.

An arresting officer voiced deep concern over Wildman’s apparent obsession with capturing wildlife, questioning the motives that led to such extreme behavior: “The public were drawn to her attention because she had managed to capture a baby seagull and was looking after it,” he remarked, hinting at an unsettling passion gone awry.

After spending a substantial six weeks in custody leading up to her court appearance, Wildman was ultimately granted bail. The defense attorney has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the shocking incident, leaving the community in suspense as they await further developments in this unusual case.
