Texas GOP Lawmaker Questions Musk’s Starlink Claims | World Business

A Republican lawmaker has raised concerns over Elon Musk’s decision to limit Ukraine’s access to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite service, pointing out that Ukrainian forces use the system for defensive purposes in their ongoing conflict with Russia.

Representative Dan Crenshaw, a Texas Republican and member of the House Intelligence Committee, expressed his disagreement with Musk’s claim that Ukraine’s military is breaching Starlink’s terms by using the service for “offensive drone strikes.” Crenshaw highlighted that the primary objective of such actions is to defend the nation. “What do you think defending your country is? Yes, these drones are used to target the enemy,” he stated during an interview on Bloomberg This Weekend.

Tensions flared earlier this month when the internet speeds for Starlink and its military version, Starshield, were reduced without clear explanations. In a subsequent post, Musk acknowledged this issue and indicated that his company had addressed a “loophole” that had allowed for offensive drone operations by Ukraine. He also noted that Starshield operates under U.S. government control.

Musk backed his statements by referencing a comment from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who explained that Starlink aids in carrying out strikes on military targets within Russian-controlled areas.

The situation has led to bipartisan criticism from supporters of Ukraine in the U.S. Congress. Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina who is not running for reelection, expressed concern about the reliance on a single CEO’s decisions for an essential military tool. “Are we really okay with one individual having such control over a crucial resource that our allies depend on?” he remarked on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

Crenshaw’s worries extend beyond Musk; he believes the real concern lies in the lack of alternatives to SpaceX’s technology. He stated, “My worry is about an entire country’s defense relying on one company. This isn’t about blaming Elon Musk for having too much power; it’s about the absence of options.”

Relations between Ukraine and the U.S. hit a rough patch following a recent deal between former President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump’s agreement not to impose tougher sanctions on Russia, in exchange for limited diesel supplies, prompted accusations from Zelenskyy. In a Bloomberg interview, Zelenskyy described Trump’s actions as attempts to pressure Ukraine into capitulation.

Trump contended that he did not order any restrictions on Starlink, but he criticized Zelenskyy, claiming that he finds the Ukrainian president harder to negotiate with than Putin. Reports indicated that Trump reached out to Musk, urging him to lift the restrictions on Starlink usage in Ukraine.

This ongoing debate highlights the challenges faced by Ukraine in maintaining its defense capabilities in the face of external influences.
