Pope Leo XIV Urges Ceasefire in Ukraine Amid Hospital Recovery
Pope Leo XIV has reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin while recuperating in the hospital. The pope is calling for a ceasefire in the city of Oleshky, Ukraine, to address the deteriorating humanitarian conditions there.
In a statement, the Vatican shared that during the phone call, the Holy Father expressed serious concern over the critical situation in Oleshky, located in the Kherson region. He emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire to allow for the delivery of food and medical supplies, as well as safe evacuation for civilians in the area.
The pope also reiterated the Vatican’s commitment to fostering dialogue and peace.
The humanitarian situation in Oleshky has grown increasingly dire, with no food shipments allowed into the city since May. The city, currently under Russian control, is devoid of essential services such as electricity, gas, and running water, leaving the local hospital in a state of minimal functionality.
Recently diagnosed with lung cancer, the 71-year-old pope underwent surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. Though still in the hospital recovering, he is reportedly showing positive signs of improvement.
While in the hospital, he conducted Mass in a temporary chapel, and the Vatican has shared images of him leading the service, showcasing his resilience.
His doctors reported that he is making good progress in recovery. A medical update indicated that he can perform daily tasks independently.
The pope is expected to deliver his traditional Angelus prayer either from the hospital or the Vatican on Sunday. Additionally, he is still scheduled to travel to South America, with plans to visit Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru starting November 6.
The Kremlin has responded to the situation in Oleshky by attributing responsibility to Ukraine, stating that President Putin provided the pope with a detailed account of Ukraine’s role in the humanitarian crisis. They also expressed approval for the Vatican’s plans to facilitate the safe delivery of essential supplies to the region.
In this challenging moment, Pope Leo XIV’s emphasis on peace and humanitarian aid shines a spotlight on the urgent needs of those affected by the ongoing conflict.
