President Tinubu Welcomes $5.79 Billion Financing from World Bank for Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his approval of the World Bank Group’s announcement regarding approximately $5.79 billion in private financing aimed at supporting Nigeria’s economic growth. He believes this funding will significantly aid ongoing efforts to expand businesses and draw in more investments.

In a recent post on social media, President Tinubu stated, “I welcome the World Bank Group’s work to mobilise up to $5.79 billion in private financing for Nigeria. This partnership supports our efforts to help businesses expand and attract investment into agriculture and digital infrastructure.” He is optimistic that these funds will create better job opportunities and improve livelihoods for many Nigerians.

According to a report made public by the World Bank Group, the financing will support various sectors, targeting assistance for farmers in need of access to quality seeds before the planting season, small business owners facing challenges in obtaining affordable credit, and students struggling with digital access to classrooms.

Furthermore, the World Bank indicated that part of this funding would assist with Project BRIDGE, a federal initiative focused on developing a comprehensive fibre-optic network across Nigeria through a public-private partnership. This project aims to lay down 90,000 kilometers of new fibre-optic infrastructure, enhancing digital connectivity throughout the country.

By integrating policy improvements, investment opportunities, risk management, and support from commercial financing, the World Bank aims to funnel private capital into essential sectors that contribute to Nigeria’s transformation and growth. The $5.79 billion initiative seeks to mobilize investments through a blend of World Bank-supported programs, resources from the International Finance Corporation, and risk-mitigation strategies provided by the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency.

The project is projected to draw in at least $156 million in private equity during its initial investment selection phase, with opportunities for generating up to $1.1 billion in private investment by the year 2030.

In his remarks, President Tinubu highlighted that Nigeria has taken a significant step by compiling a list of 65 investment-ready projects that are looking for $78.5 billion in funding. He mentioned that Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele and Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso shared these project opportunities at the Nigeria Investors Forum during the recent IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok.

“I invite Nigerian and international investors to explore these projects and engage directly with their sponsors through Projects Nigeria,” the president encouraged.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with both local and global investors to tackle any challenges, ensure the successful realization of investments, create jobs, and expand opportunities for the Nigerian populace.
