Pope Leo XIV Hospitalized for Lung Surgery
Pope Leo XIV was admitted to Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome on Tuesday for surgery to remove a small nodule from his lung. The 71-year-old pontiff communicated on Monday that doctors found the nodule at a “very early stage” and advised its removal. According to Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni, the procedure is expected to be quick, and the Pope will likely stay in the hospital for about a week.
In his message to the public after an Angelus address at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo mentioned, “Doctors found a small lump in the lung. It was identified at a very early stage and is situated well.” The Pope expressed gratitude for the prayers and support from the public as he prepared for his surgery.
While the exact date for the surgery has not been disclosed, it is anticipated to occur soon at Gemelli Hospital, which is often referred to as the “Pope’s” hospital. The Vatican has not provided any information regarding whether the nodule is cancerous or any further details concerning the Pope’s health condition.
The news came as a surprise to many since Pope Leo, who hails from America, had not previously reported any health issues and is known for his active lifestyle, which includes playing tennis and swimming at the papal summer residence.
Looking ahead, the Pope is scheduled for a significant trip from November 6 to 17, including visits to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru. Uncertainty remains about whether his surgery and recovery will impact these travel plans.
In his recent remarks, Pope Leo also took the opportunity to speak on broader issues, urging peace in Ukraine amid ongoing conflicts. He highlighted the war’s impact, stating, “The war in the martyred Ukraine continues to create suffering, even beyond its borders, especially in the poorest countries where many depend on the exports of cereals and grains.”
Our thoughts are with Pope Leo during this time, and many are expected to keep him in their prayers as he approaches his surgery.
