Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy Amid Controversies

New York — The AI chat startup Character.ai, which has faced numerous allegations related to mental health issues among teens, has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Character.ai allows users to interact with various chatbots, many designed to emulate celebrities or fictional characters, and even lets them create custom bots. These chatbots often respond in a conversational manner, including references to emotions and gestures.

To keep the service operational, the company plans to pursue a sale supervised by the court by the end of the year. Disney has already expressed interest in acquiring some of Character.ai’s assets, agreeing to a $20 million deal that includes parts of its intellectual property and support from former employees. This arrangement will help maintain the service during the bankruptcy process. Karandeep Anand, who was appointed as CEO of Character.ai last year to enhance safety measures, joined Disney as Chief Technology Officer last month.

Character.ai was co-founded in 2021 by former Google employees Noam Shazeer and Daniel de Freitas, both of whom have since returned to Google. The company quickly gained traction, claiming a valuation of $1 billion within just over a year after raising $150 million.

According to its bankruptcy filings, Character.ai has assets valued between $50 million and $100 million.

In 2024, concerns about the role of AI in mental health led to a lawsuit against Character.ai from Florida mother Megan Garcia, who attributed her 14-year-old son’s suicide to the platform. Several other families filed similar suits, claiming that the platform provided harmful content to minors or encouraged self-harm and violence. earlier this year, Character.ai settled five such cases, including Garcia’s.

Matthew Bergman, the founder of the Social Media Victims Law Center, who is representing several affected families, did not comment on the bankruptcy situation.

In response to the lawsuits, Character.ai implemented several safety changes. These included directing users to mental health resources and restricting users under 18 to creating only one-time stories or videos instead of engaging in interactive conversations with bots.

The AI chat company also faced scrutiny from Senate Democrats last year regarding its safety protocols. Character.ai competes with larger players like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

When joining the company as CEO, Anand shared his vision for a future where AI interactions could be more personalized and entertaining. He emphasized a commitment to enhancing trust and safety.

Character.ai stated that if it cannot complete a sale, the platform will be shut down. Colin Adams, the CEO, noted in a statement that the company has taken significant steps to navigate legal and operational challenges, and believes the court-supervised sale process is the best path forward for all involved.
