India Aims to Boost Global Investment During Finance Minister’s Singapore Visit

New Delhi, Oct. 9 — India is making a concerted effort to attract more foreign investment. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has arrived in Singapore for a three-day official visit, where she plans to engage with hedge fund managers, portfolio investors, and key global financial institutions.

The Finance Ministry announced on social media that “during the visit, FM @nsitharaman will meet with high-level government leaders in Singapore and connect with senior members from the business and investment sectors, as well as global institutional investors.”

As part of her agenda, Sitharaman will take part in a business roundtable focusing on interactions with hedge fund and portfolio managers. She will also hold discussions aimed at enhancing investment relationships between India and Singapore, the largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) for India.

The ministry highlighted that this visit offers a valuable chance to exchange ideas with top global investors regarding India’s growth prospects, various investment opportunities, and the changing dynamics of the global economy.

India is keen to strengthen its investment ties with Singapore, which has contributed approximately USD 194.68 billion in cumulative FDI from April 2000 to March 2026. For the fiscal year 2025-26, Singapore remained India’s largest FDI source, infusing USD 19.8 billion.

During her time in Singapore, Sitharaman is expected to have one-on-one meetings with senior leaders from major financial institutions like GIC, Temasek, DBS Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, British International Investment, and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.

The Indian government is also focusing on platforms such as the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and GIFT City to attract more investments from Singaporean investors. The ministry stated that these platforms could offer great opportunities for Singaporean capital through various investment vehicles and funds.

Sitharaman’s visit follows the 4th India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable held in August 2026, where both countries explored ways to improve cooperation in investment and other economic sectors.

The Finance Minister’s schedule includes meetings with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. Discussions will cover several important topics, including trade, investment, digital finance, taxation, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, skills development, and aviation as part of the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The Finance Ministry has committed to facilitating connections between interested Singaporean investors and Indian companies, financial institutions, and state governments, ensuring support for advancing identified investment opportunities.
