India concluded the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on a high note, securing a gold medal in men’s hockey after a 5-1 triumph over Malaysia in the final on Saturday. This victory brought India’s total medal count to 85, including 21 gold medals, ensuring a spot in the top five of the standings.
However, the final results weren’t quite as impressive as India’s historic achievement in Hangzhou, where they bagged 106 medals in 2022, featuring 28 golds. This time around, the Aichi-Nagoya campaign saw 21 fewer medals overall and seven fewer gold medals.
The journey for India was a mix of highs and lows, with some anticipated victories and a few unexpected disappointments. Just a few days ago, India found itself outside the top 10 in the medal tally, having won only 10 gold medals.
The last two days changed the narrative dramatically. Victories in hockey and cricket, along with added successes in archery, boxing, and wrestling, allowed India to claim 11 more gold medals. This impressive finish propelled India back into the top five, wrapping up the competition on a much more positive note, ultimately placing them fourth in the overall rankings.
