Weight-Loss Medications and Brain Health: A Cautionary Note
As medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy gain traction for weight loss, experts are cautioning against the possible risks associated with rapid weight reduction and severe calorie restrictions. They highlight that such practices may deprive the brain of essential energy and nutrients.
Dr. Tommy Wood, a pediatric and neuroscience professor at the University of Washington, emphasizes that the impact of these weight-loss drugs on brain health may vary significantly depending on whether the body receives adequate nutrition during the weight loss process. At a recent fitness festival in New York City, he explained, “The brain is the organ that demands the most energy.”
Understanding Energy Availability
Wood notes that the balance of energy available to the body affects brain health. When there is excess energy, often due to obesity or high blood sugar levels, it can harm the brain by damaging blood vessels and promoting insulin resistance. Conversely, if energy intake is too low, it presents its own problems for brain health.
He pointed out that the brain requires a constant supply of fuel. In extreme cases of calorie restriction, the brain may be forced to consume its own tissue for energy, leading to serious structural risks.
“There have been studies showing that during intense activities, like running a marathon, the brain may shrink slightly due to a lack of energy—showing just how much fuel it needs,” Wood explained, adding that participants typically recover well after they rest and replenish their energy levels.
Lean Muscle and Nutritional Risks
Concerns also arise regarding potential muscle loss linked to GLP-1 medications. Wood clarified that some of the lean mass lost can actually be fat that has built up inside the muscles, meaning muscle quality can improve even if the size decreases.
However, he warns that drastically reducing food intake over long periods can rob the brain and central nervous system of vital nutrients needed for their health. “If you’re not eating enough, you miss out on essential nutrients,” he stated, highlighting the importance of omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and vitamins for brain function.
Protecting Brain Health During Weight Loss
To help protect brain health while losing weight, Wood recommends incorporating resistance training into your routine at least twice a week. This not only helps maintain muscle mass but also promotes the growth of brain-supporting factors.
He also stresses the importance of consuming a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, such as B vitamins, vitamin D, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids, to avoid long-term cognitive issues.
Wood advises that while starting a weight-loss medication may be beneficial for many people, it’s crucial to ensure that they are still meeting their nutritional needs throughout the process. “Make sure you don’t overdo it—ensure your brain is getting everything it requires,” he cautioned.
