Sylvester Stallone Opens Up About Health Challenges in New Memoir
Sylvester Stallone, the beloved actor known for his iconic roles, has revealed some surprising struggles he’s faced throughout his career. In a recent interview with The New York Times, the 80-year-old star talked candidly about his battle with an eating disorder.
As he prepared for the intense role of Rambo in the early 1980s, Stallone wanted to embody a more fierce and powerful look, drawing inspiration from animals like jaguars. However, this drive soon spiraled into an obsession. “It became really bad. I ended up with bulimia,” he admitted.
Bulimia, characterized by episodes of overeating followed by purging, can severely impact a person’s health. Stallone shared how his determination to maintain peak physical condition led to unhealthy behaviors. “I couldn’t keep food down. My focus on fitness became an obsession,” he explained. During the filming of “Rocky III,” he reached dangerously low body fat levels.
In addition to his eating struggles, Stallone has acknowledged using steroids at certain points in his life. He explained that he took them carefully but still felt their physical toll. “I’ve abused my body,” he said, noting that years of performing his own stunts have led to multiple surgeries on his back, shoulder, and neck.
Stallone also shared that he’s dealt with anxiety for many years. He recalled his first panic attack happening when he was just 36 while watching himself on screen. Since then, he has faced repeated anxiety episodes, especially before major public appearances.
Experts are applauding Stallone for his openness about these issues. Brian Pollack, a social worker and specialist in eating disorders, praised Stallone’s willingness to share his experiences, highlighting that many aspects of his life may have contributed to his struggles with body image and health.
Psychologist Giulia Suro also emphasized how vital it is to recognize that eating disorders can affect men, not just women. She believes Stallone’s revelations could help change long-standing misconceptions about these illnesses.
As Stallone continues to navigate his health journey, his transparency serves as an important reminder that even stars face challenges behind the scenes.
