Ukrainian President Warns of Potential Russian Threats to Europe
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a strong warning on Tuesday about the rising risks of Russian attacks on other European nations. Speaking after a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Zelenskyy expressed concern that Russia might try to further disrupt European unity and reduce support for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy highlighted the alarming possibility of drone, missile, or ground assaults on countries near Russia and Belarus, stating, “The risk of offense is very high.” He suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin, frustrated by failures in Ukraine, may look to create chaos in Europe to influence Western governments.
He elaborated, saying, “To split unity in Europe, they might attack someone else. If they show they can go further, it puts pressure on nations to reconsider their support for Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian leader pointed out that recent drone incursions and threats across Europe indicate that Moscow is already trying to instill fear and test the resolve of European countries. He believes that Putin’s failure to achieve a clear military victory in Ukraine may push him toward more aggressive actions to reassure the Russian public about the war.
When asked how European nations should respond to this escalating threat, Zelenskyy replied simply, “Always respond.” He emphasized that if no action is taken, Russia would likely continue its advances.
This warning comes amidst worries about increased Russian activity in Europe. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently cautioned that peace is under threat in Europe, urging nations to take the situation seriously. He called for a coordinated response to counter the growing risks.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also alerted the public to potential Russian attacks on NATO countries, saying they could occur disguised as accidents to weaken the alliance’s response.
These concerns are not just speculative. Recent events include a drone entering Romanian airspace and being reported by the Defense Ministry, as well as Italian fighter jets intercepting a drone that crossed into Lithuanian airspace from Belarus, likely linked to Russia.
As tensions rise, Zelenskyy has been in discussion with Trump about a possible agreement to halt mutual attacks on energy facilities, signifying the urgency of the situation. He stated their openness to reaching an understanding, although he was unsure if Russia would also agree.
With aerial assaults intensifying and the need for air defense systems becoming more pressing, Zelenskyy’s remarks underline the precarious situation in Europe and the need for vigilance among its nations.
