Prime Minister Modi Set to Visit Canada in December Amid Trade Talks
Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India is likely to visit Canada in December, as confirmed by Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday. This visit comes as both nations aim to finalize a trade agreement by the end of the year, marking a significant step in repairing their previously strained diplomatic ties.
During discussions at the United Nations General Assembly, Carney expressed optimism about the ongoing trade negotiations, stating, “We’re making good progress with India.” He emphasized the importance of the relationship, highlighting connections that extend beyond trade to include personal and security aspects.
Carney first initiated trade discussions with India late last year at the G20 summit. This effort is part of a broader strategy to decrease reliance on the unpredictable U.S. market. The target is to wrap up negotiations ahead of the G20 meeting scheduled for mid-December in Miami.
Modi’s visit is highly anticipated, with Carney saying, “I very much look forward to hosting him.” However, the Canadian government is still cautious, particularly in light of past allegations by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that the Indian government has been involved in serious crimes on Canadian soil.
The trade discussions have been ongoing for several years, but relations between Canada and India took a hit after the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023. Four Indian nationals are currently awaiting trial in connection with the case. In September 2023, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of being involved in Nijjar’s death, a claim that New Delhi has denied.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has also raised concerns about India’s actions, citing it as a significant source of “transnational repression.” Despite these challenges, Carney has advocated for repairing ties with India, asserting that Canada has fostered collaborations with Indian law enforcement and security officials during negotiations.
A successful trade deal with India—one of the world’s fastest-growing economies—could potentially double bilateral trade to $70 billion, a major boost for both countries. Modi’s December visit was first reported by the Globe and Mail.
