President Droupadi Murmu recently called on film celebrities to be more careful about the products they choose to endorse, especially those that may pose health risks to the public. Speaking at the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony in Gujarat on September 22, she noted the significant influence that well-known artists have on children and youths, encouraging them to advocate for healthier lifestyles.
The awards this year took place in Ekta Nagar, Kevadia, bringing together many prominent figures from the Indian movie industry. This event marked a change from tradition, as it was held outside New Delhi for the first time recently.
During her speech, Murmu discussed the powerful impact that successful artists have on young people’s choices and behaviors. She stated, “When popular artists talk about living a disciplined life, numerous children and young people look up to them. I encourage you to avoid promoting products that could harm health. A true star brings light, not darkness.”
Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of treating all members of the film community, including workers and emerging artists, with respect and providing them with social security. Murmu also highlighted the need for increased female representation on juries that select films for national awards, stating, “It’s important to ensure women’s participation in every regional jury.”
Her remarks came in the wake of controversy surrounding a Vimal Elaichi advertisement involving Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff. The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration issued notices to these stars, suggesting that their involvement could be seen as promoting Vimal Pan Masala, a product banned in the state. The issue has also escalated to court, where the Delhi High Court recently dismissed a petition challenging the FDA’s notices related to this advertisement.
