Young Swimmer Yu Zidi Shines at Asian Games

At just 13 years old, Yu Zidi from China has made waves by becoming the champion at the Asian Games. Competing in the women’s 200m butterfly final, she set a new record for the Games, finishing with a time of 2:05.08, which was more than three seconds faster than her closest competitor, Chang Mohan.

In an impressive performance, Yu bettered the previous Asian Games record, which was held by fellow Chinese swimmer Zhang Yufei and set three years ago, by nearly half a second. Despite her incredible achievement, Yu’s reaction was refreshingly modest. After being awarded her gold medal, she joked, “It was only so-so.”

A Bright Future Ahead

Yu’s success at the Asian Games comes just two years before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where she could potentially shine on an even larger stage in the sport of swimming. With her time of 2:05.08 in the 200m butterfly, she is now less than four seconds away from the world record of 2:01.65 held by Canada’s Summer McIntosh. This significant gap indicates that there is still plenty of potential for improvements in Yu’s performance.

Earlier in her young career, Yu made a mark by becoming the youngest swimmer ever to win a medal at the World Championships, securing bronze as part of China’s relay team when she was just 12 years old. However, this recent gold at the Asian Games is particularly special for her, as it is her first major individual title and comes with a new record.

China’s Rising Star in Swimming

Yu’s remarkable rise in the swimming world coincides with China’s growing dominance in the sport. On the opening night of the Asian Games, China won six out of the seven gold medals available in swimming, with Yu delivering one of the standout performances.

However, Yu is not one to rest on her laurels. She expressed her desire to keep improving. “I hope I can swim even faster,” she said. “I improved my time by 0.9 seconds here, and I believe I can do even better next time.”

Yu has set her sights on the Olympic podium, with the aspiration to one day stand at the top. “I train hard every day. Success doesn’t come overnight,” she noted.

Currently, Yu is still a schoolgirl and will turn 14 next month. But with an Asian Games gold medal and a new Games record to her name, she is certainly a young athlete to watch in the future.
